In a few weeks it will be that time of year again… back to school. If you are a college student or you have a

college student you know how quickly expenses can add up. Between textbooks, school supplies, dorm room   necessities and all the other little things that make studying for a midterm exam a little more exciting the number can get pretty large. However, we do have some tips that can help you save some money.

Geetanjalie or as we call her “Gee” is our summer intern and an accounting major at University of Hartford. She just finished her second year and has a few tips that she uses to help her save money anywhere that she can.

Gee's College Savings Tips:

· Rent or buy used textbooks when possible; I usually rent textbooks for classes that I know I will not need the book as a reference once the class ends.

· If you do purchase textbooks try to sell them as soon as the semester ends; keeping textbooks for too long may cause them to lose value.

· Set a budget for the semester and try to stick to it.

· Buy snacks and supplies for your dorm in bulk because they will last longer and it is cheaper than going to the store once a week to stock up.

· Splitting the cost of groceries and other essentials with roommates can help you save a lot of money.

· If it is not necessary to have a car on campus leave it with the parents. Most campuses have Zipcars that you can rent for the time that you need it for.

· Limit eating out to only when it is absolutely necessary; if you have access to a kitchen try cooking meals with friends.

· Shop wisely, ask for student discounts everywhere you go. Most local restaurants and stores near your university have student discounts.

· Stay away from credit cards if you know you won’t be able to pay the balance at the end of the month.
